More tokens, lower rewards
Crypto investors are staking more tokens even as staking rewards fall. Bitwise data shows Ethereum has 43.8 million ETH staked, about 35.9% of supply, a record. Solana active stake reached 440.5 million SOL. Gross annualized yields dropped on both networks. The gap raises a simple question: why lock up assets when payouts are shrinking?
Countercyclical demand
Part of the answer is investor behavior. John Zettler of Payward Services said staking tends to be countercyclical. In weaker markets, more holders sit on assets and stake them, which pushes yields down. Stronger markets can work the other way. Higher fees can lift rewards, while demand for liquidity may reduce participation. That is not a perfect rule, but it helps explain the recent trend.
Industry executives also see a longer shift. Staking is becoming a normal part of holding crypto rather than a side trade. A Coinbase spokesperson said staking ETFs and digital asset treasuries are widening access. The spokesperson argued that retail and institutional investors are looking at long-term benefits instead of short-term price moves. That claim is hard to prove, but the product lineup suggests more people can stake without running validators themselves.
Implementation is the new question
For institutions, the debate has moved from whether to stake to how to do it. Kean Gilbert at Lido said clients ask about validator diversity, code audits, and how much of a fund is actually staked. Custody and asset selection still come first. Staking often follows once assets are already on a platform, according to Zettler.
Ethereum’s validator count needs context. An upgrade lets operators combine validators into larger balances, so fewer validators do not always mean fewer independent businesses. That may be why headline counts can look weaker than the underlying activity.
Falling yields may not stop participation if access keeps improving. Gilbert expects staking to become routine for ether holders. Perhaps in five years, he said, people will wonder why anyone held unstaked ETH. That is a forecast, not a fact, but it points to where the market is heading.
