X is overhauling its advertising platform in what it calls the most ambitious update in the company’s 20-year history. The rebuild is a major step as Elon Musk pushes the social network deeper into payments, AI, and an everything app strategy.
The changes were announced earlier today. The rollout begins this month in phases, according to a post on X. The company says the new system focuses on three areas: simplicity, more control for advertisers, and AI-driven performance. The tech uses modern retrieval and ranking models to understand user behavior in real time. That should improve ad relevance, targeting, engagement, and return on investment.
A long-needed reset for advertisers
This rebuild gives X a stronger ad technology foundation. The platform is trying to regain momentum with advertisers after years of turbulence under Musk’s ownership. X was expected to post its first annual ad revenue growth since the 2022 takeover, but revenue still stays below its pre-acquisition peak. I think many advertisers had simply moved to other platforms because X’s ad tools felt weaker. So this overhaul feels like a long-overdue reset.
The new ad stack ties directly into X’s closer integration with xAI, Musk’s AI company. Monique Pintarelli, head of global advertising at xAI, said the rebuild allows faster product updates and a regular flow of new features for advertisers. That might give brands more confidence to return.
Everything app ambitions take shape
The timing matters. X is pushing on several fronts at once. Musk said in March that X Money, the platform’s digital payments system, would enter early public access in April. Reuters also reported that X partnered with Visa to support wallet funding, peer-to-peer payments, and transfers back to bank accounts.
Taken together, the ad rebuild, X Money rollout, and deeper xAI integration show a platform moving further toward Musk’s everything app vision. Whether advertisers come back in big numbers remains unclear, but X is at least trying to give them better tools.
