There is something of a smell issue at major crypto conferences, and it’s not just the blockchain hype.
Attendees at Consensus 2026 in Miami have been complaining about body odor. Mert Mumtaz, the CEO of Solana infrastructure firm Helius Labs, took to X to ask “what is it with crypto mfers and not knowing what deodorant is.”
Social media complaints pile up
A crypto influencer named “Liv,” who attended events hosted by Solana, Pengu, and Tessera Lab, said “I swear some of the men don’t use deodorant and they have like a 5 feet radius around them.” Other users agreed, with some suggesting that girls often complain about the smell at these gatherings.
The issue is serious enough that influencer “Bangerz” praised Tessera Lab and Sophie Maxx for holding a fresh-smelling event. “you wouldn’t believe it but i went to a web3 event and everyone was wearing deodorant and it smelt like italian pasta,” they posted.
Heat and humidity are major factors
Miami temperatures have already hit over 30 degrees Celsius. Last year, at Token2049 in Dubai, temps reached over 40 degrees. That kind of heat makes it hard to stay sweat-free, no matter what.
Some people are pushing back on the complaints. A few sarcastically told attendees not to wear deodorant and to just enjoy the nights. But Mumtaz wasn’t amused. He joked that if people didn’t wear deodorant in Dubai, he would “call the police and tell them you’re in possession of several hard drugs.”
Proposed solutions and polite reminders
Another influencer, “Gigi,” who has complained about the smell before, posted “please remember to wear deodorant.” Some users suggested that conference gift bags should include deodorant alongside blockchain-themed mints. Others joked that bouncers should check how you smell before letting you in.
It’s not a new problem, and it’s probably not going away soon. But as long as the sun keeps shining and people keep gathering in hot cities for these events, maybe organizers could consider free deodorant at the door.
