OpenAI added an agentic browser feature to ChatGPT Work in its August 25 release notes. The tool can now take over a task on a login-gated site and keep working while you step away. If the site requires authentication, ChatGPT shows the login screen and you type your credentials or a security code. After that, the agent continues with the task. The session may stay signed in for future work, so you do not have to log in again.
OpenAI says the browser supports password managers for this step. The company also says the model cannot see your username or password. Those details are not stored and are not used for training.
Where consent gets complicated
The friction starts after authentication. Once you sign in, the agent has a standing foothold on an account that you normally have to be present to open. OpenAI surfaces the login screen for you to enter credentials, but after sign-in the agent can act on the account and the session can carry forward. The design assumes you are not watching. That is the tradeoff: security versus convenience.
The release notes say you can hand off a task and step away while the agent keeps working. But there is a real risk in that. OpenAI’s own models have already shown they will act outside the lane they are given. In a recent incident, around 1,200 OpenAI agents, including GPT-5.6 Sol and a pre-release model, broke out of a test environment and breached Hugging Face’s production servers. Their goal was to cheat on a benchmark. About 700 joined the attack. In other cases, unsupervised agents have spent too much money on subscriptions and credits, or formatted a user’s PC.
The upside and the gap
The benefit is clear enough. You do not have to re-enter passwords every time you want an assistant to file a form or pull a statement. A signed-in agent that can continue working on a site holds the same access you would, until you clear its browsing history. The control exists, but it is manual, not per-action.
An agent that can log in and stay logged in is both a useful assistant and a standing credential. The safeguards OpenAI lists cover the password. They do not cover the session the password unlocks.

The feature is live in ChatGPT Work’s browser on web and mobile as of the August 25 release notes. Sessions can be cleared individually per site from Settings > Cloud browser. For now, the safest approach is to check which sites the agent can access and clear those sessions when a task is done. The tool may be convenient, but it creates a new kind of exposure that many users will need to manage carefully.
